Controversy Erupts Over Emmy Nomination for Palestinian Journalist with Alleged Terrorist Ties
The entertainment industry is facing a heated debate over the Emmy Awards nomination of a Palestinian journalist, Bisan Atef Owda, who is accused of having ties to a U.S.-designated terrorist organization. The pro-Israel nonprofit organization, Creative Community for Peace (CCFP), is calling for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) to rescind Owda's nomination, citing her alleged involvement with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).Uncovering the Controversy: A Closer Look at the Emmy Nomination and Alleged Terrorist Ties
The Nomination and the Allegations
Bisan Atef Owda, a Palestinian journalist, was nominated by NATAS in the Outstanding Hard News Feature Story: Short Form category, alongside the Qatari-owned media outlet AJ+, for their series "It's Bisan From Gaza and I'm Still Alive." However, the CCFP, a Jewish entertainment nonprofit, has discovered Owda's long-standing ties to the PFLP, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization.According to the CCFP, Owda regularly spoke at PFLP rallies and hosted events to honor Palestinians injured or killed in violent confrontations with Israeli soldiers. In 2018, the PFLP explicitly referred to Owda as a member of the Progressive Youth Union of the organization.
The Alleged Violation of NATAS' Code of Conduct
The CCFP argues that Owda's nomination violates NATAS' Code of Ethical Conduct, which states that "NATAS and its Chapters have zero tolerance for discrimination, harassment or illegal, dishonest, unethical or otherwise harmful conduct." As a member of a U.S.-designated terrorist organization, the pro-Israel nonprofit contends that her Emmy nomination "could reasonably be construed as contrary or detrimental to the best interests of the Academy."
The Potential Consequences of the Nomination
The CCFP has expressed its concerns that the Emmys' decision to honor someone with alleged ties to a terrorist organization is "inexcusable" and could be seen as "legitimizing a terrorist organization." The nonprofit has warned that if the Emmys do not rescind the nomination, they will be "glorifying someone who is a member of an organization that has carried our numerous aircraft hijackings, participated in the Oct. 7 massacre in Israel, carried out waves of bombings on markets and restaurants and murdered innocent women and children."
The Call for Responsible Representation in the Entertainment Industry
The CCFP has emphasized the importance of the entertainment community, including the National Television Academy, using its voice to "help build bridges for peace and understanding." However, the organization believes that the Emmy nomination of Bisan Owda, with her alleged terrorism ties, is "unfathomably irresponsible" and is "condoning violence and helping to normalize PFLP terrorism around the globe."
The Lack of Response from Key Parties
Owda, AJ+, and NATAS have not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment on the allegations and the CCFP's call for the rescission of the nomination. It remains to be seen how the various parties involved will address this contentious issue and the potential implications for the Emmy Awards and the entertainment industry as a whole.
